A learning highlight for the year has been the introduction of the daily reading program. Each day, teachers, admin and support staff spend 20 minutes in the classroom to give each student the opportunity to read. Our students have risen to the challenge and we have been delighted to watch reading levels improve, confidence grow and many of our wonderful readers committing to, and even enjoying their reading! We have had a strong Community Education program at the College this year which has seen learning move from the traditional classroom. Central Land Council, Anangu Jobs, Mutitjulu Aged Care, the Docker River Rangers and several Mutitjulu community members have helped us run a very successful Learning On Country program. The Rec Centre was perhaps the most popular of our weekly excursions. The fellas loved soccer and basketball, using the weights and even had a go at boxing. The girls played basketball, used the exercise machines upstairs and in Term 4 started a dance program with Cathy. In terms one and four the last half hour was always spent in the pool, the most popular activity of all. In February over 20 students completed their basic swim survival courses and two went on to complete their Bronze Medallion. After a short hiatus during the Principal’s absence, Friday night soccer returned with a vengeance. Staff noted that the evenings were generally well-attended and students enjoyed opportunities to play against a range of players with often impressive skill levels. The kungkas and occasionally some fellas visited Walkatjara Arts Centre each week to paint bookmarks which were sold to tourists from all over the world.Throughout the year the design skills of the regular participants showed great improvement and there were some excellent, unique bookmarks produced. Students from both Mutitjulu and Docker River participated in the Nyangatjatjara College Tri-State Music Intensive along with 65 students from the NPY lands. The Mutitjulu senior fellas were selected to be the supporting band for the final showcase and have been approached for more gigs inYulara! Other highlights were trips to interstate schools, alongside students from other campuses of our College, and hosting return visits from these schools. However, without a doubt the most exciting thing for the teachers this year has been watching the changes take place in all our students.Throughout the year behaviour improved, more and more students started having a go in all their classes, and some excellent work was produced. Look out for some excellent school work throughout this book that demonstrates the varied skills of our wonderful group of learners! Everyone should be proud of their achievements this year and we can’t wait to see what 2017 brings. Yulara teaching staff
